For this episode, we have a special guest with us, Suraya Ali! Suraya is the granddaughter of Ben Ali himself, the founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl. And she’s here to help share the rich history of Ben’s Chili Bowl with me.
Ben’s Chili Bowl was founded in 1958 and since then it has become a landmark restaurant in Washington DC and an icon of American Culture. During the 1968 riots that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Ben’s chili bowl was not only left standing, it also stayed open to feed and provide shelter to those working to restore the neighborhood after the devastation.
Because of its historical significance, Ben’s Chili Bowl has drawn a fair share of celebrities and presidents through its doors, such as Chris Tucker and Barack Obama. Not to mention they serve a mean bowl of chili!
