The very first Thanksgiving dinner happened in 1621, and that bountiful feast displayed a variety of dishes such as waterfowl, venison, ham, lobster, pumpkin, and squash. Thanksgiving dinners have evolved over time, and by 1887 The White House Cookbook by F.L. Gillette and others featured the familiar menu of roast turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and much more.
