Despite being 47% of the employed population in the US, women hold just 28% of computing and mathematical roles. This gender imbalance becomes even more glaring when considering the lack of representation among Asian or Pacific Islander women (7%), Black women (3%), and Hispanic women (2%). Accenture’s research indicates that half of the women who enter tech end up leaving by the age of 35 due to a lack of inclusivity – also finding that 52 women are promoted to manager for every 100 men.
These statistics call for action, and AvePoint has taken a proactive approach by launching the Women in Technology (WIT) employee resource group. We had the privilege of sitting down with Senior Account Executive Karen Devaney, the President of WIT, to discuss the evolution of this group and its mission to create a more inclusive workplace.
Why are ERGs important?
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) serve as crucial platforms for employees to connect, network, and build relationships beyond their immediate working teams. These groups offer a sense of comfort, allowing individuals with similar experiences, challenges, and aspirations to come together. ERGs create a supportive environment where members can share their stories and inspire each other to overcome obstacles and achieve success. By fostering a sense of belonging and community, ERGs significantly contribute to employee satisfaction and retention.
What is WIT’s mission?
WIT is dedicated to attracting, advancing, and celebrating women in technology. The primary goal of this group is to empower women to thrive both personally and professionally, with support from colleagues, customers, partners, and communities. WIT recognizes the importance of providing a network that encourages women to pursue their passions, break barriers, and unleash their full potential in the technology industry.
How has AvePoint supported WIT?
AvePoint has demonstrated unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, and this is evident in its strong support for WIT since its inception. Launching WIT was met with immediate approval, highlighting AvePoint’s dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace. The leadership team at AvePoint has played a pivotal role in supporting WIT, participating in events, providing resources, and inviting influential speakers. This level of support reinforces AvePoint’s determination to empower women in technology and create an environment where everyone can thrive.
Why are AvePointers passionate about being a member of WIT?
Being a part of WIT ignites a passion within its members by offering a platform for women and allies to connect, inspire, and support one another. Even the minimal time spent each month in WIT’s encouraging and positive sessions serves as a source of motivation. WIT creates an invaluable support system within the organization, ensuring that women never feel overwhelmed by the day-to-day struggles they face in the workplace. Knowing they have a community to lean on empowers women to be their best selves, both professionally and personally.
What has WIT achieved so far this year?
WIT has made significant strides this year. A memorable re-launch event was held on International Women’s Day, featuring Janet Schijns, a member of AvePoint’s Board of Directors, who presented and highlighted the importance of recognizing women’s achievements in the technology industry. Additionally, WIT organized a session where members shared slides featuring influential women throughout history, celebrating their impact. These events not only educate and inspire but also foster a stronger sense of community within WIT.
What does the future hold for WIT?
WIT has an exciting lineup of speakers planned for the year, aiming to bring fresh perspectives and insights to its members. Furthermore, WIT is expanding its reach by establishing regional meetings in the EMEA and APAC regions. With the formation of a dedicated WIT Committee, the group is actively working on initiatives to give back to the community and engage in philanthropic endeavors. By aligning their efforts with social causes, WIT aims to make a positive impact beyond the workplace, leaving their mark in the communities where they live and work.
