Issue

When using a Platform Backup job to back up Search Service Application or Help Search Instance index components, the following error message may occur:

Reason for this Issue

Backing up index components requires specific permissions to VSS Writer. If the logged-in user who is accessing the corresponding SharePoint service does not have appropriate permissions to obtain information from the VSS Writer, the index components cannot be backed up using VSS.

Solutions to the Issue

Refer to the sections below to resolve this issue.

Solution 1

Add the logged-in user(s) of the corresponding SharePoint services to the local Administrator group, and then restart the Search Service.

Solution 2

If you do not prefer to add the user(s) to the local Administrator group, DocAve provides you with the following equivalent permissions:

  • Full control to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Diag.
  • Add a DWORD(32-bit) value to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\VssAccessControl with logon user as the Value Name and 1 as the Value Data.
  •  Member of the following local groups: Distributed COM Users, Certificate Service DCOM Access, and WSS_WPG(default)
  • Allow the Access, Launc​h and Activation permissions for the logon user in COM Security. Complete the following steps:
  • ​Navigate to Start > Administrative Tools > Component Services. In the Component Services window, click Component Services > Computers, and then you will find the My Computer icon. Right-click the My Computer icon and then select Properties from the menu. In the My Computer Properties window, open the COM Security tab.
  • ​In the Access Permissions field, click Edit Default, and then add the specified user. Allow the Local Access permission for the user. (If multiple search instances are started, allow the Remote Access permission)
  • ​​​​In the Launch and Activation permissions, click Edit Default, and then add the specified user. Allow the Local Launch and Local Activation permissions for the user. (If multiple search instances are started, allow the Remote Launch and Remote Activation permissions)
