If you are using ControlPoint, read below to see why AvePoint’s Administrator is clearly the superior solution.
ControlPoint vs DocAve Administrator
Issue
ControlPoint
DocAve Administrator
Why It Matters
Installation
Installation of ControlPoint requires full-trust code deployments into SharePoint and requires at least one IIS reset that will interrupt user access to SharePoint.
Managing multiple farms with ControlPoint requires installation inside each farm, and if the farms are in different domains, a two-way trust needs to be established.
To manage Office 365, you will need to stand up a SharePoint on-premises farm to install ControlPoint.
As DocAve does not require any full-trust code deployments to SharePoint, installation and updating of DocAve does not require IIS resets and doesn’t interrupt user activity in SharePoint.
Management of multiple farms or Office 365 is easy to set up and manage from a single interface. No trusts need to be established for multi-farm scenarios.
Configurations and settings can easily be re-used across farms without impacting the availability of your SharePoint servers.
Whether you’re on premises, online, or hybrid – nothing compares to the simplicity of managing all of your farms and Office 365 tenants from one place.
Our products were built with this principle in mind, to support your journey to the cloud.
Impact on SharePoint farm
To allow non-admin users to leverage ControlPoint functionality, a SharePoint Timer Job needs to be run which crawls through all SharePoint sites on a periodic basis to collect configuration data, group memberships and permissions.
This means that ControlPoint is competing for SharePoint resources with end-users and can impact the performance of SharePoint.
DocAve has a flexible delegation model that does not require timer jobs or crawls to determine who can leverage DocAve functionality.
Our focus on enterprise scalability has ensured that DocAve is a low-touch management tool for your SharePoint environment from the setup of the software to the use of its features and functions. Whether you are a multi-farm environment or a single-server farm, we make sure our software operates behind the scenes.
Extensible policy rules
ControlPoint ships with a pre-set list of actions and settings for which policies can be defined, but lacks the ability for policies to be created for actions and settings not supplied out of the box. Only adding/updating content in lists and libraries can be subject to a custom web service rule.
DocAve Administrator’s Policy Enforcer has a fully configurable and extensible policy engine that ships with over 30 common rule templates. For more specific policy needs, the rules engine is fully extensible allowing customers to conceive, create and enforce virtually any permission, configuration, or user action rule.
We can’t plan for every scenario – so we do our best to get you started, then let you take the reigns to tailor our software to your policies – not the other way around.
If you’ve been thinking about transitioning to AvePoint, there has never been a better time to move.
